The next day I drove out to the "distribution center" to return them. I accidentally dropped one speaker unloading my car and split it wide open. I insisted to the distribution manager that the speaker had come that way, and the sales guys who sold them to me looked too scared to argue with me.

"Without a crossover, woofers will be trying to reproduce treble and overheating, tweeters will be trying to reproduce bass and distorting, and midranges will have both problems at once. Turn the volume well up and you will damage each driver in turn, starting with the tweeter."

If the woofer rolls off nicely and doesn't exhibit any nasty breakup modes or get too beamy, there isn't always a need for any sort of crossover for it at all. The woofer's voice coil inductance prevents it from trying to reproduce frequencies much higher than its mass dictates, so it won't overheat.

There's several well-respected speakers which run the woofer fullrange with no crossover - the Dynaco A25, Goodmans Magnum and designs using the EV 12L woofer, although that's more designed as a fullrange with helper tweeter.

Re that blackhole list that's decided dansdata.com is a malware site: This happens sometimes. The blackhole list in question provides no obvious way to complain. I'm ignoring the problem and hoping it goes away, which false-positives like this usually do.
