French names and muslim baby names. Try looking at them too and make the important decision of choosing a name for your son or your daughter.

In most US construction, the circuits for lighting and wall plugs are usually the same. Not always, mind you, but usually. Under the old code, there were so few circuits that a mix was inevitable, and they always spanned multiple rooms (to prevent the failure of one circuit plunging one area into total darkness, but creating some odd circuits). Nowadays it is possible to find dedicated lighting circuits, but they are rare, and usually able to handle much more than the bulbs put in them.

That doesn't mean that the individual wiring to a particular socket isn't shoddy, and in fact it quite very well may be if someone's been running an up-rated bulb in a fixture, causing the wiring above to go brittle, but at least that's easy to check for and fix if someone is truly intent on dangling a thousand watts from a lighting drop. Most individual lines should be able to handle a KW, but the fixture is the sticking point, they are seldom rated higher than about 600 Watts.

Yeah - there are lots of household appliances that use a thousand watts or more. Toasters, fan heaters, electric jugs, etc.

But as I mentioned above, light-socket wiring may be dodgier than wall-socket wiring, largely because of this. Wiring that catches fire whenever someone makes toast will go away, one way or another, pretty quickly, but crappy lighting wiring that will catch fire whenever someone draws a kilowatt from a single light socket won't announce itself until that fateful day.

On the subject of other multi-bulb abominations, Big Clive's Luminosity Monstrosity deserves a mention. Also make sure to read his Things To Make And Do, if you haven't already!

It would be fun to have somebody upstairs switch that on while I watched the electric meter actually spin up. Until the ancient wiring in my house burst into flames in the walls and I was stuck in the basement with the house burning above me.

My house in the good old US of A still has lath and plaster walls with fabric insulated wires in parts.

That there 1kW sucker will be in my nightmares tonight.
